Did a small interview with John Backstrom, talkin bout the SPACE idea and this party..

INTERVIEW.

1. What do you hope to accomplish with SPACE?

Well, from the beginning the goal of SPACE has been to inspire and change the way people think about how a space can be used. We want the environment to feel different every time someone experiences it, in more than just a “here’s some different art on the wall” or “this is a different line-up of musicians” type of way. We really want to engage the audience in a new and unique way for every event we have.

2. You live with a whole host of artists, yah?

Yeah, I live with three, Kris Dales, who is a sculptor and mixed media artist, Ryan O’Neill, who is a graphic designer and installation artist, and Tristan Sennholz, a musician.

3. What events have you held there so far?

Our first event was for the first Thursday artwalk in October, which consisted of hanging pillow installation by Ryan, with a video projected over it. Underneath the pillows, Tristan and our friend Nic Brodine played a half hour set on guitar and drums that went with the video(documentation of this installation is on display in the Cornish Main Gallery right now as part of the Legacies in Print show). After that we had the Green and Fair Fashion show for some friends of ours who run ethical fashion companies in Cambodia, and then we had this insane Halloween experimental rock/metal show, with a large array of paintings all over the walls by our friend JD Banke, and fellow video artist Jonathan Rafael and myself projected some videos we made onto spiderwebs. The show that’s coming down as I type this was for the November artwalk, which was a collaborative video/paper installation by guest artists Allyce Wood and E Dughi, along with some other stand-alone works by each of them.

4. What are you most excited to showcase at the upcoming CONTROLLER PARTY?

Well, first of all I’m really proud of my friend Cory Schmitz and all that he’s been doing, so I’m definitely hyped just to showcase his work. I’m also really excited to have an established musician like PWRFL Power play, especially seeing as I don’t think he has really been playing many shows lately, and also I think the other musicians will be fantastic as well.

See you tomorrow!

BHR001 – Any Questions? EP (Released 11-12-10) by Bass Hound Records

Double Oh No heads this brand new label, here’s some info!

Bass Hound Records is the new label owned and operated by DJ/producer Double Oh No from Seattle, Washington. We aim to provide good, free bass music to all the sub heads across the globe. Bringing together bass heavyweights from around the world and Seattle producers on every release, we’re gonna tear shit up this year and next! Every release on Bass Hound will be 100% FREE, with a new set of tracks dropping every month. Forthcoming releases include tracks and remixes from Tony Rocky Horror, Figure, Z-Kat, Bruce Stallion, Kozee, Kanji Kinetic, Feedback and many, many more πŸ™‚

Our first release features original rat pack inspired tune “Any Questions?” by head honcho Double Oh No himself along with remix support from The Squire Of Gothos, NONEWYORK, Feedback, and Simtek. Squire’s remix is pure big ravey speed bassline business. NONEWYORK brings the darker, melodic, deep future garage touch to the table. Sleazetone’s own Simtek provides a garage-y banger of a mix heavy on the sub bass. And last but definitely not least, Lithuanian producer Feedback turns out a dirty dirty electro house stormer with a killer hip hop paced breakdown.

INTERVIEW.

1. First off, to me you’re one of the freshest DJ’s in the NW rave scene..on a few occasions you’ve brought me out of a bad funk at a party..you’re song selection and energy come through very strong..what drives you as a DJ?

Thank you! What drives me while performing is exactly that, performing. So many DJ’s stand behind a set of turntables and never move or acknowledge that there is anyone else in the room. I get so excited about the music that I’m playing, and that shows through the performance. The main thing that keeps me performing is to see other people get just as excited about the music that I’m playing and get into it with me.

2. How long have you been mixing? Have you always been real immersed in the electronic community?

I started going to shows in 2000, and immediately became obsessed with the music. After dancing myself through about 15 pairs of shoes, I started to play. That was sometime around 2002. Eventually I started to play at house parties in Pullman, WA. After moving from there to Tacoma, I practiced every day in my living room for hours and hours. Around then is when I started getting involved in promoting my first club night and started involving myself in Equalize Entertainment. It wasn’t until I met J Sharp in 2004 that I started to get DJ bookings in Seattle though. Since then, its all been a ton of fun. In the past few years, I have become really involved in stage design, management and lighting, which I currently do for USC Events and Digital Innovators.

3. Who are some DJ’s you’d love to tag-team with?

Myk, Channel Surfer, Cameo, Sonny Chiba, Jaden from PDX, All of those guys bring different aspects to DJing and playing with each of them is a completely unique experience.

4. How would you describe the style of music you play? And what’s the best party you’ve performed at so far?

For years, I was strictly a dark, tear out breakbeat DJ. Becoming bored of that, I have reached out into playing electro, dubstep, fidget, dnb, progressive, polka… you name it. Expanding to more styles gives the opportunity to be able to take listeners to places they didn’t think they’d go with you. As far as the best party, that’s really up in the air. Playing at the Showbox with Steve Aoki and Infected Mushroom was pretty surreal. Playing the Showbox SoDo with Benny Benassi was pretty cool too. Honestly, I’ve had just as much fun playing for 15 people as I have for 1,500. Any show where people get into it is a good one!

5. Got any big plans for 2011?

HAHA. Finish up my degree from UW. That’s really what’s most important to me. Besides that, I’ll probably just keep doing what I’m doing. Being the production manager for USC Events and Digital Innovators keeps me really busy. Hopefully get back to LA, Boise, SLC and Portland to DJ.

6. Favorite song at the moment?

There are so many…… Demigod by Triage and Jaden, whatever was on that CD Plump DJs gave me last week, La Roux – In For The Kill (Skrillex Remix), Miike Snow – Silvia (Felix Da Housecat Remix), Sub Focus – Could This Be Real, Joan Reyes – Shakedown (Bass Kleph Remix), Pretty Lights – So Much In the Dark, and countless other songs.

7. Any last words?

Banana
