Azealia-Banks

All this negative talk about Azealia Banks is annoying to me. Yeah, yeah..she doesn’t get along with people sometimes, but isn’t that true for all of us? Sometimes people pick and choose when they want to be offended, and all that passive aggressive judgment is so tired. I know when I pull up someone’s music if they are the real deal or not, and Azealia is more real than most. She’s young, she’s got attitude and she’s still learning about herself and how she relates to the world. Give her a break, calm down and enjoy the music.

P.S. Her debut album, “Broke With Expensive Taste” is set to drop in the very near future..

Coachella-2011-The-Video-Game

I was feeling a bit drained when I sat down to do research on this Green Velvet (aka Curtis Jones, Cajmere) feature. As I begin searching through his 2009 RA interview and a 2011 interview with Slices – The Electronic Music Magazine, my energy level began to climb. I took in the depth and huge amount of time this man has been putting music out there; driving the influential Chicago House scene, running 2 labels for a long bit and consistently innovating up to this present day.

As a DJ, I relate to his focus and determination to do his best and create a fun environment for any audience placed in front of him. Music has always been a grounding force for Curtis Jones, as he has seen the highs and lows of the music industry. And he is still strong today, remaining a stable force in the dance music community. So much of what I look for in tunes I play out is that strong rhythm that you can strut to. And Green Velvet has developed quite a strut with his music.

This will be the 4th time Decibel has brought Curtis out to play Seattle, tonight’s show takes place at Q. This is part of Flash Friday’s, which Decibel and Shameless take over once a week. The one time I saw Curtis play, it was under his Cajmere alias for Decibel Festival 2011, and that was one of the best DJ sets I’ve ever heard. He created an equally alien and welcoming environment that I was completely mesmerized by. Grab presale TIX for tonight’s Q show, and share the FB event if you feel so inclined. You’ll see me bouncin’ around the club for sure.

Few people work it like Beyonce. When I think of sass, I picture her wearing those chandelier sunglasses at the beginning of the “Diva” video. The entire visual presentation here is badass. The black and white effect, the dancing, posing, and the song itself is packed with attitude. Gets me hyped. The outro of the “Diva” plays a clip of “Video Phone”, a track and video that I also love. This one is just too hot to handle. It’s the only time I’ve been supportive of Lady Gaga, who does well back to back with Beyonce here. I just know that Bee is running things.

Disclosure-2013

It was a Disclosure kind of morning for me; bright, sexy and slick. This UK duo, comprised of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence is absolutely destroying everything. The production quality and song structure coming from these dudes blows my mind. They have a debut album set for release on PMR Records anytime now. Nothing else to say, just listen and feel it for yourself.

When I first heard the name Metro Area, I wasn’t sure if I knew the music. So I pulled up their Beatport page and found some rad tracks that were familiar to me. Top tracks like “Miura” and “Proton Candy” are very breezy, and it’s obvious why they are so loved. Based in Brooklyn, Metro Area is a Nu Disco / House group comprised of Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani. If you want to check out some of their releases, theirs the 2012 Environ release Metro Area 5 & 6 and their 2006 self-titled Metro Area album, also on Environ.

Decibel and Shameless are holdin’ down Flash Fridays at Q in Seattle. Tomorrow, they will join forces with Trouble to feature Metro Area’s Darshan Jesrani, DJ Trouble and residents Nordic Soul and Recess. It can’t be said enough, the booming Funktion One soundsystem in this club lets you hear tunes more ideally. Get your advance tickets here.
