This guy brings the party. Such high energy music, I love it! Astronomar has releases on Top Billin and Mad Decent Jeffree’s, which are ace. Grab his recent mp3 ” courtesy of XLR8R – Interview below

DD Whatsup Astronomar? I believe the first time we talked (at the Rye Rye show?) you connected me with Michael Grunden of George Bashington Productions. I helped promote a few of his shows and ended up opening his Boysnoize Records showcase in Seattle. First off, thank you for introducing us! What are you up to?

A No problem, Mike is the guy! Recently I’ve been working on music and trying to eat lots of fruits & veggies, haha! Trying to narrow down my remix work , though I am always experimenting on original tracks and also have a couple collabs in the works. June 25th my colab EP titled “Horse Code” with Swick (Australia) comes out on Enchufada, J-Wow from Buraka Som Sistema’s label.

DD Your first release “Had To Move On” is rad. I realized that I included that track in my tribal set for my label, 7 Deadly Records release party last December. Were you expecting such a positive reaction from this release?

A Thanks man glad you like it! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I was definitely hoping for the best. Though I was blown away when I saw a video of Crookers playing it at I Love Techno. its extremely inspiring to get support from any of your musical heros.

DD There are so many Astronomar tracks and remixes on your Soundcloud. Going back to your first attempts at producing, did you have a period when you thought you’d never get the hang of it? Were their certain producers and/or tutorials that helped you along the way? I bet their are some new producers reading this..

A Yeah, I think we all have those moments when we feel stuck in some way or another, but as long as you think it out and continue to work, you will progress. I didn’t really watch tutorials to learn techniques, the way I do things is a bit backwards and is mainly a result of trial and error.

DD You’ve had some very innovative producers feature your tracks in their mixes, including Crookers, Diplo, A- Trak and Cedaa. Whose done your favorite mix with a production of yours?

A Yeah man it feels great to get their support! I can’t pick a favorite tho, I really enjoyed all those mixes and not only because they featured my tracks. Those are all guys I respect and would be happy to check out their mixes anyways.

DD From your experience playing shows in Seattle and getting to know the electronic community around here, is there anything you’d like to see more of? Certain styles getting more attention and such?

A From my observation, there are a lot of talented people doing electronic music in Seattle, in a multitude of genres. It actually seems as though the artists outnumber the audience most of the time. So I’d have to say Seattle’s electronic music community would greatly benefit from having more open minded folks on the dancefloors.

DD The “Ya’ll Know EP” you put out on Top Billin is very very cool. I saw a funny ep teaser video for the release, did you have any input on the direction of this video?

A Thanks man, happy you like it! Yeah my good friend Timbre made that video. I sent him a few silly clips to give him an idea of what I was aiming for, and he took it to a whole new level!

DD Brenmar, Four Color Zach yourself and others will be playing at Lo-Fi in Seattle on July 13th, 2012. How would you describe the overall feel of this show, for those thinking about stopping by?

A It will be really dope! We have a very musically diverse & talented line up, and its at a cool spot with cheap drinks. We just had Jubilee last month and that was really dope.

Released this month, XI presents his Joy/Fear EP on New Kanada. As you’ll see in this interview, I’m quite fond of this guy’s style, and had a fun time getting to know him.

DD Welcome, XI. You’ve easily become one of my favorite artists to feature on Disco Droppings. How’s it goin’?

XI Maxin’ and relaxin’ all cool, just shootin’ some b-ball outside of the school.

DD Before I read into some of your past interviews, I listened to your music and noted a similar reaction with Actress. In both instances, I get the feeling that I’m in some alternate, almost alien environment, and I like it. If you’ve heard Actress’s R.I.P album, how has it impacted you?

XI I take that as a massive compliment because I don’t try to parallel my own productions with his, but I find his music massively inspiring and consider him probably my most favourite electronic music artist of all time. R.I.P was one of the albums I was eagerly awaiting this year and the circumstance under which I heard it for the first time was as wonderful as the album itself. His is some of the only stuff these days that puts me into an alpha state, much like you are describing. The divergent reality effect. Since 2006 his music has been the soundtrack to much of my life. Current favourites off the record are title-track “R.I.P”, “Tree of Knowledge”, “Uriel’s Black Harp”, and “Ascending”.

DD What video games have the best soundtracks, in your opinion?

XI There are many classic soundtracks that spring to mind, one that sticks out (due to the emphasis on the music itself being part of the package) is Quake 2, another is EVE Online (which I’m open to admit playing semi-regularly). Video game music is a unique breed that sits somewhere between movie scoring and just free writing. Games like Katamari have soundtracks with music that simply wouldn’t go outside of the game environment. Some classic NES titles (some of which I have sampled) that I love are games like Shadowgate, Mega Man, and of course the Final Fantasy series (Jenova boss music ftfw).

DD What would a game, with a soundtrack by XI, look like?

XI I think I would do best scoring a future-fantasy epic. Something that takes forever to finish with a twisting story line, probably to do with the origins of the universe and involving some bit where the main character is in some extra dimensional plane contemplating the nature of reality. I’m talking plate worlds, sub orbital strongholds, loads of spacecraft, innumerable star faring races, plenty of chronicled inter-galactic lore, large-scale wars. Oh yeah, and it would also have to primarily be a love story. But the main character doesn’t get the girl at the end and the bad guys win.

DD Your new “Joy/Fear” EP on New Kanada has an incredibly distinct atmosphere. The track, “Nightlif” creates such a confident mood, very deep and emotional. What was the most rewarding thing about making this release?

XI Putting out this latest record was great. I was really happy with the tracks and could feel that they really suited where I’m at artistically and express exactly what’s going on in my mind currently. Working with Adam Marshall has been a great experience, and all the tracks on this record have been directly inspired by my new found life here in Berlin. Over the last year the way I make music, the way I think about it and how it actually ends up sounding has changed drastically, so I’m glad to have some of this new stuff see the light of day AND be received so well across the board. Even the free promotional give-away track Glythe was something I was really excited to get out there.

DD Going way back to a release you did in 2008, Smoke Signal/Strategy on Off Road Recordings..”Smoke Signal” is a mammoth track dude! Wow, was not expecting a track like that. Was your mindset much  different back then, or is this just a different approach to making beats?

XI Back then, comparatively, I had no idea what I was doing. So long as it had complex rolling drums and a huge baseline I was satisfied. In ’08 I was primarily concerned with writing tracks for my DJ sets that would get people moving and work out the sound systems. I am still cognizant of sound system workouts in my new stuff, but I’m personally getting more satisfaction out of making more expressive music, some might say I’m moving more into listener territory these days, and whether or not that is true, one thing I can say is that I’m much happier with my output lately than I have ever been.

DD Where do you plan to take XI in the rest of 2012?

XI Live set, longer records, more story telling, more trance inducing melodic sojourns, more Bill Withers appropriation, getting slower and slower, and taking over the world by sword or subterfuge.

We goin’ hard today on Disco Droppings, with the powerful return of Bosstone. He’s got a solid EP out on Paradisiaca Recordings called The Gun Club, as well as a remix for Mike G’s Boost release, on Car Crash Set. Pay attention..

DD So many stunning Bosstone trax have been created since we last talked in November 2011. You are another talented dude from Australia that’s been profiled on Disco Droppings. I’ve got to get down to your country and see James Arctic, What So Not, Mirror State, Benson and yourself in action. How are you feelin?

B Feeling good bro. Getting really positive feedback on my new tracks so everything’s going well! Yeah, you’ll have to come down some time! I think you would like Aus.

DD I’ve been bumpin’ your new mix for PTW quite a bit. I watched some of the video showing you mixing it up on the Pioneer CDJ’s. We are kindred spirits as DJ’s, got some of those myself. Is that the equipment you usually use, or do you enjoy Ableton and/or Serato for playing shows?

B Thanks! Really glad you feel it. I’m only just starting to pick up dj’ing so it’s cool to get your support. Yeah the CDJs are mine, they are what I usually use to practice on and what I use in the clubs. I’ve never tried using Ableton or Serato for a show, kinda put off by how unstable they can be sometimes. They look interesting though, so maybe when I get a new laptop and have some time to check them out I will.

DD Your remix of “Miami To Atlanta” is INCREDIBLE. I’m happy to say, this Bosstone re-work (along with “Lean”) will be played on a massive stage during my set at Paradiso Festival on 6.23 (Performers include Knife Party, Chris Lake, Afrojack, Digitalism, Dillon Francis). The style of this remix is a bit unexpected, compared to your other productions on Soundcloud. Is that a one-off thing, or will you ever do something similar in the future?

B I’ve really been influenced a lot by Jersey club, B-more and New Orleans bounce and have been playing around with that sound for a while now and a couple of my tracks have been really influenced by this (Up or my remix of Amerie – One Thing for example). DJ Hook, DJ Sliink and Nadus have definitely been a part of this and I owe them so much for their support. It’s not the last time you’ll hear this sound from me, I’ve got some stuff cooking up.

DD I checked out your buddy Lucid‘s music, super rad. You two seem like a formidable pair. What’s your dynamic like together? What do like most about this guy?

B Lucid is like my big gay brother. But meaner. He’s got a great work ethic and he tells it how it is.

DD Is your community of fans evenly mixed between guys and girls? It feels like you’d get respect from the lads and lots of love from the ladies..

B From the looks of it it is a little weighted towards the guys. I think that’s just the way the scene is at the moment, or at least that’s what it seems like in Melbourne.

DD When I hear the music your putting out, the words “swag” and”attitude” pop up. You’ve got a lot of style, and I was wondering if there’s any ultimate examples of swag that you look to currently?

B Goldust. 17 time WWE & WCW champion. Enough Said. Lunice. He’s just got that aura about him you know. The way he keeps party’s so hype is a real talent to have. Sometimes people take music too seriously, I think he and Hudson Mohawke are bringing some fun into dance music which is something I’ve always tried to do with my tracks. Riff Raff and Lil B have been doing the same sort of thing as Lunice and HudMo in rap which I love.

DD What’s in the works for the rest of 2012?

B So much! I’m off to Europe next week, staying in the UK and France. Going to link up with some producers over there so hopefully some new collabs are on their way. Going to start work on my next EP while I’m over there too. Just finished up two remixes which I probably can’t say much about… but they are some of my favourite tracks I’ve done to date so I can’t wait to share them with everyone. This year is going to be a big one.

I sense strong vision and loads of fresh energy coming from this Australian duo. I talk with What So Not about the music community in their area, the idea behind the “Get Free” remix, their brilliant 7 Dollar Bill EP, out on Sweat It Out! and such and such.

DD Whatsup? How’s it down in Sydney?

WSN Yo dude! Sydney’s been awesome. Weathers great. Both Harley & myself bodyboard and the surf has been killer lately. Pretty much in the water unless we’re writing tunes.

DD I have some buddies down there in your area; James Arctic, Mirror State and Benson. It sounds like there’s some fresh diversity coming out of Australia, would you agree?

WSN Ah sweet, yeah I know Benson as well, good bloke! Yeah I’m loving so many Australian artists at the moment. Everything got a bit mainstream here for a while, but true vision & talent is starting to push through. Ta-Ku, Hermitude, Harley’s solo project Flume. At the other spectrum, bands like ‘Last Dinosaurs’, Parachute Youth & dance producers like ‘Peking Duk’ & Benson, all killin it!

DD I’m forgetting which artist led me to your remix of Major Lazer’s “Get Free”, it was posted on their twitter a little while ago.

WSN I know Nero did a tweet bout it?

DD Ah! Shame on me for forgetting it was Nero. At 54k plays on Soundcloud, it’s getting a lot of love and for good reason. Of the remixes I’ve heard of this track, I feel yours stands at the top. Did you guys know straight away what you wanted to do with the original? That drop is very unexpected..

WSN Yeah the response has been crazy. Our good friend Nina Las Vegas (DJ & Triple J Radio host) sent it of to the Mad Decent team & they loved it. I think they must have forwarded it to their crew, cause all these big names started posting bout it & playing it.

We started an original that day, which is pretty much the percussion you hear in the track. Hitting a creative wall, we thought maybe work on a bootleg instead. Dropped ‘Get Free’ over the top of the drums & it fit really well. I left it with harley that arvo & he came up with the most insane left field baseline for the drop. Kid is a genius.

DD Your “7 Dollar Bill” EP is crisp, clean and well balanced. It’s very dancey, with a nice amount of space between the various sounds. You two seem very in tune with your emotions after hearing “Love Theme”. I sense a lot of warmth in your productions overall. You use sounds that I hear in dance music currently, but there’s something special about the way you combine it all. Is an emotional element for What So Not a conscious direction?

WSN Harley has a very good grasp on chords, melodies & vocal bending, which often stimulates a lot of emotion in the tracks. I don’t know if it conscious, but both of us are very passionate about music. The most important thing for us is exposing ourselves to a wide variety of sounds, drawing inspiration & pulling it all together.

DD This “Mega Mini Boombah Mix” boasts 50 tracks in ten minutes, pretty mad! With so many songs included, it doesn’t sound at all crammed. You definetely have a gift for clarity when working with a lot of sounds. Is this something you’ve been practicing a lot to deliver?

WSN Ah thanks! I think a lot of that came from my years making complex mixtapes, bootlegs & mashups; layering various hooks, vocals stabs, beats, synth riffs & buildups to form a high density stand alone track for club sets.

DD What are your plans for summer and the rest of 2012?

WSN Well we’re playing all around Australia at the moment which has been amazing. There are plans in the works to venture overseas & we have some really big international remix offers on the table, which I think will aid in that coming about. We’re also planning to have our second EP complete within a few months

DD Last words? Hope to have you back on Disco Droppings soon!

WSN Thanks to everyone thats been discovering & enjoying our music! & thanks to all the blogs that are supporting us! (including Disco Droppings of course)!

Known for being one of the finest DJ’s around, Brackles stops by Disco Droppings for a quick interview. He’s got a wonderful album out via Rinse entitled “Rinse Presents: Brackles”, head over to Boomkat to take it all in. The lp features vocal collaborations with Lily Mckenzie, Terri Walker and Meleka.

DD What is your goal as a DJ when you’re  directing a dancefloor?

B Obviously I’m trying to make sure people have a good time, but also I hope I’m playing music people haven’t heard a 100 times before. That can be brand new dubplates or perhaps more obscure records from the past but if the crowd is with me. I try to stay clear of too many obvious tunes.

DD Any Brackles releases on the way? Any plans to tour the U.S?

B Yes, my debut album dropped on Rinse a few weeks ago. It features 4/5 vocal tracks. No plans to tour the U.S but should be back out to do New York after the CD is out.

DD Top five songs in your current tracklists?

B Fuzzy Logik and Myshy – Pose

C4 – Off Track

May7ven – Tenten

x5 Dubs – When I See You Smile
