For the final day of Decibel, I choose the Friends of Friends showcase (Fb). This 21+ party happens at The Baltic Room, with sets from Shlohmo, Salva, Groundislava, LOL Boys and Lazy Brow. Back in 2010, I met Henry Laufer aka Shlohmo outside of Neumos after his Decibel set. He wasn’t 21 at the time, so the venue booted him out. On the positive side I got to hang out with him, and soon after, a Shlohmo interview appeared on Disco Droppings. Those that get hyped on variations of hip-hop, and the environments created by The Weeknd, Flying Lotus and Baths should swing by The Baltic Room on 9/30.

It’s difficult to create a worthy remix for Wheez-ie’s “Keep Yer Chin Up”. I say that because the original is so fucking incredible. Leave it Salva to come up with something magical. Groundislava has a new album out entitled Feel Me on Friends of Friends. His superb XLR8R mix can be heard ova here. The track selection, mixing and dreamy narrative fit snugly together. Lazy Brow is the label head of FoF, and he starts off the night with a DJ set.

George Bashington Productions are to thank for putting this show together (FB event), with Live For The Funk sponsoring. Lunice brings fresh energy and effortless style to the hip hop world. Now 23, he’s done remixes for prominent labels such as Mad Decent, XL Recordings and Young Turks. A part of the LuckyMe collective (Machinedrum, Jacques Greene, Rustie), he released the One Hundred EP and the Stacker Upper EP in 2011. I’ve been especially taken by “Runnin”; the smooth beat he did for Azealia Banks, as well as TNGHT; his collaboration with Hudson Mohawke. Tomorrow marks Lunice’s first Seattle appearance. All hip-hop enthusiasts, and those drawn to future dance sounds should give him a warm welcome and come to Neumos.

Kastle from San Francisco joins Lunice. Be sure to catch the whole lineup, with sets from RL Grime and my buddy Cedaa happening early on.

See Gulls live at the “XLR8R Presents” showcase with Actress, Teengirl Fantasy and Ghosts on Tape. This show happens Friday September 28th at The Baltic Room, 21+ (TIX). Interview below.

DD Hello Gulls, how are you?

G Hey good morning. I’m good, enjoying these last days of NW summer, sipping tea, and at the moment listening to Ras G.

DD Disco Droppings chose the XLR8R Presents showcase for Day #3 of Decibel Festival 2012. You’ll be opening this show, supporting Actress and Teengirl Fantasy. Are you familiar with their music?

G Yeah.  I have been listening to Actress’s music for several years. I love the deep space that he brings, and the unpredictability in his tones and sequencing. Teengirl Fantasy is new to me, but I am looking forward to seeing them live, as they are avid hardware users. Between myself and them, The MPC 1000 will be well represented on this night!! Nothing sounds better than an MPC on a BIG system!

DD What role does improvisation play in your live performances?

G Improv is probably 80% of what I do live, between building patterns in real time, live arrangement/deconstruction/composition, and analog dub style mixing. Often I sketch out parts, melodies, etc. beforehand, but I try to keep the live set as real time as possible. Although things never end up going the way I planned, the vulnerability of improv is really where the fun is. Chasing those frequencies all over a huge sound system is a joyous thrill.

DD You are the founder of Boomarm Nation, an experimental label from Portland, Oregon. What got you interested in starting this collective?

G I wanted to create an outpost for the sounds that I feel are essential and important to a sort of global sound system evolution. Experimental approaches to sound system music are important, now more than ever. As they can help push and pull at peoples ideas and expectations of how sound and rhythm can work together.

DD Your bio says that every track is built entirely from the ground up. Can you explain this process?

G Often I will start a tune based off of melodies that I write on guitar or trumpet. I try to record parts in the first take so that they don’t lose the vibe of the moment the came from. Then I translate them to MIDI or re-sample my self playing the parts on various other instruments. The goal being to use my own musicianship as the source material, rather than sampling other peoples’ work.  Don’t, get me wrong… there is a place for that too!! But I come from a background of playing instruments, and it’s important for me to translate that feeling into my music.

DD Talk a bit about your Running Times EP, recently released on Boomarm Nation. I see that you can get it on vinyl, cassette or digitally.

G Yeah. In July, Boomarm Nation released the vinyl in a limited run of 200. Followed by a short run of cassettes. Both are still available, but are going fast.  The digital version was released worldwide in August, and is available from all major digital download retailers. The cassette and digital versions feature seven amazing remixes by some of my favorite producers from around the world. It also features the remix debut of SWAMI MILLION which is Will and Si from the UK-based group LV (HyperDub / Keysound). Leading up to Decibel, I will be offering all of the remixes available for free download via the Boomarm Nation website for the whole month of September.

“Ghetto Kraviz”, The above track by RBMA and High & Tight showcase headliner Nina Kraviz is everything I want to hear in a dance track. It’s hypnotic, sexy, dark and driving. Those of you who follow this blog know that I love a sassy lady (see my “Diva Dayz” features), and Nina Kraviz is holdin’ it down for fierce women everywhere. Her sultry tracks have lifted her up towards the top of the house and techno world. A listen through clips of her debut, self-titled album and it’s clear that she is a force to be reckoned with. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed her Resident Advisor podcast, as well as this interview with Dummy Mag.

Before moving further, I must tell you about this new Seattle venue, Q. It is located at Pike & Broadway, and is going to be the shit. Q is being described as a chic and glamorous new club for Capitol Hill, spread across a 12,000 square-foot building. Opening on September 7th, 2012, this snazzy club will feature emerging and established DJ’s on a colossal sound system. Scott Smith, one of the owners, was previously involved with the creation of XL, one of the most renowned gay clubs in New York. Smith has since moved to Seattle, and joined forces with Andy Rampl, to bring Q to life. Avoiding the VIP vibe for a select few people, this club will bring impeccable service and a high quality experience to every club-goer inside. “Sound Investment AV will handle the installation of Q’s custom, one of a kind sound system, from legendary UK sound system pioneers, Funktion One, the only one of its caliber on the West Coast. Steve Lieberman, owner of LA’s powerhouse SJ Lighting will handle Q’s state of the art lighting. Both firms are internationally known for their design of clubs and concert tours.” (Stranger).

Joining Miss Kraviz, we have the prolific Roman Flugel. Producing since the early 90’s, his releases delve into house, techno, electro and ambient/idm. He’s a major fixture in the German electronic community, for his personal productions and savage DJ abilities.

Some of you may recall my past interview with the very talented Beeple (Brainfeeder). His most recent project empowers VJ’s (aka visual jockeys, aka the dude controlling visuals at shows) with four.color.process; a free pack containing 10 clips of a similar theme. Use these Creative Commons licensed clips to amp up your next VJ sets. Under this license, clips can be edited to your liking for any/all commercial and non-commercial purposes. Got nutz. The “four.color.process” link contains all of the Cinema4D project files used to make these clips, plus Adobe Illustrator files used to make some of the textures and similar graphics.
