Over the next few weeks, Disco Droppings will focus on each day of Decibel Festival 2012, choosing one showcase that you must see. My recommendation is that you buy a dB pass as opposed to purchasing individual showcases. The current price is $225 for a 5-day pass (45 per day is pretty damn cheap). With the pass you have access to 35 club showcases, 5 Optical showcases, 3 dB Films and the 3-day dB Conference. Now that I’ve gone through the entire list of dB artists performing this year, I’ll be doing my part to share their sounds here on Disco Droppings. Keep your eyes here over the next 2 months, for an in-depth look at several artists you’ll see at the end of September for Decibel Festival 2012 in Seattle.

Now, I’m all about Clark. Some of you may remember my recent post on his brilliant “Turning Dragon” album. When I found out he was playing this year for the Warp Showcase (Warp Records is the beyond legendary label who has released music from Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Broadcast, Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi, Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Mount Kimbie, Prefuse 73, Squarepusher and the 3 artists playing this showcase to name a few) I was sooooooooo hyped! With all the material Clark has, I can’t guess what this live set will sound like (I’ve been told he’s heavy). He’s the type artist you’d rarely see around these parts, and someone I thought I’d never experience live.

Joining Clark, we have Jimmy Edgar. Detroit-based techno artist influenced by funk, jazz and r&b. At 18 he was picked up by Warp Records, and has been putting out slick releases ever since. Sounds like this will be a sexy, sweaty set.

Raising the BPM to staggering levels at times, we have Machinedrum. I heard him last year at Decibel Festival with Ital Tek, witnessing a pounding 140-160 BPM collection of tunes. Dude is a genius with more output than I can keep track of. You may recognize “Fantastix” from Azealia Banks’ savage new mixtape, Fantasea (Machiendrum beats can be heard w/ Azealia on “Aquababe”, “NEEDSUMLUV”, “Van Vogue” and “Grand Scam”).

I will be opening this showcase..

Released in early June of this year, Jeffree’s Volume 3 features my dude, Slick Shoota. He’s become a big part of my music world since I interviewed him for Disco Droppings, and I love watching him run and make some epic noise. Hear “Rasta”, “Percussion Skank” and “Wile Out” (Originally from Shoota’s “Percussion Skank” EP on Jeffree’s, now available in high quality) + music from Bwana, Baauer and Wiwek.

I haven’t taken time to listen through “Humbug” (2009) and “Suck It and See” (2011), the third and fourth albums from Arctic Monkeys, but their first 2 records are a big deal to me.  Now I was hooked right off the bat upon hearing “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” (2006), this was before electronic music latched onto me, and I was lovin’ on The Strokes, Bloc Party, Coldplay and Interpol. Once Arctic Monkeys dropped that first record they instantly blew up; the album became the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history. I mention charts sometimes, which can be interesting in their own way, but the album speaks for itself. You can hear the entire record above.

Sophomore albums can be difficult to nail, but similar to Bloc Party, the Arctic Monkeys returned with an evolved sound on “Favourite Worst Nightmare” (2008). Favorites include “Do Me A Favour”, “Old Yellow Bricks”, “Fluorescent Adolescent” and of the massive “Brianstorm”. The full album is posted here as well.

Right now, I feel a bit jaded. I’m searching for something and a lot of what I’m seeing/hearing isn’t connecting with me. Tame Impala continues to be a wonderful exception. They confidently embody a mindset I long to have, and have shown tremendous growth since the release of their first album, “Innerspeaker”. I’m eagerly awaiting the release of my favorite band’s new record entitled, “Lonerism”. Look for it on October 9th in the U.S. via Modular People.

Many of A-Trak’s comments in his well-written article for the Huffington Post mirror my critiques on EDC 2012 in Vegas. A lack of effort from many in the EDM scene has been noticed, and I’m happy it’s being addressed. If you’re going to play all over the world, often on huge festival stages for massive audiences, you better bring it.

His words hold a lot of weight; winner of 5 world DJ championships, former DJ for Kanye West, co-founder of Fool’s Gold Records, half of Duck Sauce and an all-around solid artist for the past 15 years. So all you DJ’s and producers out there..take notes. This is a challenging and thoughtful analysis of the current state of electronic dance music. Take it in, and contribute something memorable. Thank you Melenie for sharing this article with me.
