Archives for the month of: July, 2012

I grew up watching a lot of cartoons from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel. Doug, Hey Arnold!, Invader Zim, Ren & Stimpy, Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life and such. But I never had an appreciation or interest in the animations themselves, or the drawings involved. When it comes to anime/manga, I had no knowledge of it growing up or as an adult up until very recently, except for Daft Punk’s Interstella 5555. Similar to how I became interested in electronic music, one event led to an explosion of rabid interest. That event was receiving Akira Volume 1 from my friend Brandon Sprouse. He explained to me that Akira was THE story to read first, if I wanted to get into mangas. And once I opened that thing up, I was astounded. The detail in the artwork for one doesn’t seem possible, the intricacies are devastatingly impressive. The story is presented in six volumes that completely immerse you in the Neo-Tokyo landscape envisioned by Katsuhiro Otomo, the writer and illustrator. Focusing on isolation, corruption and the destructive elements of power, Otomo weaves these themes into a perfectly realized story.

I won’t give anything else away. You could read synopsises of the volumes on Wikipedia, but you may as well get the film and/or start reading the mangas.

Because Akira, the West was exposed to manga and anime. Along with Blade Runner, these environments laid the foundation for Japanese dystopian works in the late 90’s. When most animes released around the time of Akira presented works with lazy animation details, Otomo’s film burst through with highly advanced animations and meticiously crafted scenes.

On Friday, July 13th 2012, I’ll be breaking in the first Standard night at Baltic Room with an opening DJ set, 9:30-10:30 (FB event).  Focusing on fresh, expansive, and at times unpredictable dance music, this monthly is tuned for audiences looking for diversity. I’ll be reppin’ my blog Disco Droppings with some personal favorites so far. Listen in for Seazo, XI, Azealia Banks, Minerva (forthcoming track on Car Crash Set), James Arctic, What So Not, Liar..plus some artists I’m hoping to feature in the future. I’ll also play a remix of mine from a past 7 Deadly Records release. The lineup also features Sky Rose, Ghostplay and Sounds In Silence. Come and get worked by some throbbing bass..

I lost track of these “Diva Dayz” features. Planned on doing them weekly, apologies for slacking. The Destiny’s Child and Aaliyah features still receive lots of love, which is rad.

I’ve been on an Azealia Banks binge. Her work opens up a perfect opportunity to bring back my sassy female posts..this time with a serious punch. I had seen Azealia’s name pop up on just about every blog for a while, but for some sad reason I never listened to any of the music. Now that I finally have, she’s got a  ridiculously sick batch of songs to share, all by the age of 21. There’s this thing with blogs where we wanna be the first to share a new artist, or announce a new sub-genre, and part of me felt bad that I’m getting on Azealia Banks so late. But it doesn’t matter who heard or shared it first, what matters is that the music has connected with you. Now it’s time for Disco Droppings to celebrate what she has done so far, and her major plans for the future.

Last night I was out with my girl Caroline, checking out the Trashed night at Baltic Room. We felt the DJ’s played some interesting trax, but overall it didn’t go anywhere. The crowd seemed strange to me, I guess I’m just used to dancing and music being the top priority, not chatting and standing around. We left early and headed up to my #1 bar, The Pony. We had a lot of fun in there, and to top it off, as we were about to leave..”212″ from Azealia Banks came on. I lost my shit.

Banks is doing exactly what needs to be done. Connecting her insane rap skills, with producers of some of the most innovative electronic music around. I’d be jumping around her Youtube videos and say, “Oh shit, she’s working with Machinedrum!”, and then “Azealia is working with Lone? Rad!”, followed by “and Lunice?!” followed by “OHHHH SHE DID A TRACK WITH HUDSON MOHAWKE!”. Not to mention her collaborations with Diplo and Drums of Death.

Now with with major label deal with Universal Music, Azealia Banks is prepping her debut album entitled “Broke With Expensive Taste”. I’m not covering everything she’s been involved with, so for a nice history of where she’s come from and her exponential rise following “212”, read about it in Complex. Her EP 1991 is now available, have at it. Her new mixtape called “Fantasea”, is now available for free and I can confidently say, it is THE SHIT. Get em’ GRL!

For those of you that enjoyed my first feature on What So Not, they’re back! 2 remixes were sent over to me, reworks of Peking Duk’s “I Love To Rap” and Airwolf’s “Believer”. Purchases of these two fine remixes can be made through Beatport, just follow the link on these Soundcloud players. Keep hustlin’ What So Not, Disco Droppings is throwing you some encouragement.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Space venue in Pioneer Square (Seattle) has booked me more times than any other venue. 7 Deadly Records  “Safari Zone” release party was held there, and the Space boyz have showcased all kinds of art over the past 2 years. Cheers to them for all the time and effort put into this venue, hopefully they will return soon at a new location. Some friends and I played one of their final shows for Gentrifest. Big ups to Firedrill for the especially hoppin’ set, had the crowd buzzing. And an even bigger big ups to the mastermind of Space and VJ for this night and so many others..the very talented, John Backstrom aka Sleepy Hologram.  Photos by Ian Buck, see the rest on his Tumblr.
