INTERVIEW.

1. How does your location affect your music?

I feel like living in a country which is mostly focused on indie-rock, pop music, and hip hop (to a far lesser extent) sort of makes me focus on making more bizarre sounding beats. And because I feel that people aren’t really paying attention to my sound in general, it allows me to just make whatever comes to mind and just roll with it. The weather is also really extreme, so in the ridiculous heat of the summer and the extreme cold of the winter I find myself just sitting inside, unable to go out much. I guess that’s when the beats get real weird.

2. I like your song names, where do these ideas come from?

I grew up listening to a lot of hip-hop. I still have the lyrics to countless songs committed to memory. The song titles are basically lyrics from different hip-hop songs lol. These particular lines stood out to me so I end up using them as song titles.

3. How would you describe the feel of your music?

I’d describe my songs as just being really bizarre, real weirdo stuff. I think part of the bizarre feel comes from the fact that there’s a lot crammed into them…which might make them a little bit harder to get into. Many things coming at you at once. So they seem a little bit “anxious”, for lack of a better term.

4. As an artist myself getting into producing it can feel a bit intimidating..any really good encouragement you’ve gotten since you started?

Ignore what everyone else is doing and just make music that you enjoy yourself. A lot of people might be making a certain sound or whatever, but just work at making something that represents yourself. I’m still new at this, and still have a lot to learn, but I’m glad I’m not worrying about following a particular sound. Gives me more room to just find my own style. And additionally, don’t measure your own music up to other music you feel is really good. If you do this you’ll always perceive your own music to be garbage.

5. Any major projects in the works for you?

I’ve got zero major projects in the works unfortunately lol. I suppose a “major project” is just to figure my sound out a bit more. Maybe a little EP sometime next year, we’ll see.

Drawing a blank right now. Probably a quote from “The Wire” lol.

1. That small demo of “ERTH FIEND”, ahhh I really like it! Are you working on more tracks similar to this one?

At the moment im trying not to restrict the genre as you can probably tell with the music i have posted. having only started not long ago i think its important to try out different styles and influences before i limit myself to one sound. i have a few tracks similar to that, and i do think im heading in that direction, but anything could happen. basically just rolling with the punches at this point.

2. I feature a whole bunch of house dj/producers from AUS, sounds like you got a lot of fun going on there! How has your location influenced your music as Slamagotchi?

I started of listening to glitch about a year ago now, when i lived in sydney. the scene over there is getting pretty big, with local producers such as Dizz1 and Mark Pritchard aka Harmonic 313 doing there thing. It was through one of my friends that i was introduced to glitch and have been listening to it from then on. I have since moved back to my home town of Adelaide where the scene isn’t as big, but i am working on getting stuff of mine and other producers out there, as i know it will take off soon.

3. your beats are sooooooooo sexy. what got you inspired to produce? what has this evolution been like for you?

The first ever glitch i heard was the Hudson Mohawke mixtape and my favorite song was trapper keeper by Low limit and it blew my socks off! i have been looking everywhere for new beats ever since and i figured i may as well start to make some stuff of my own, just as a hobby. I got a copy of ableton Live about 7 months ago and pretty much spend every waking minute just playing around. basically the evolution of my music has been related to the music i was listening to at the time, and also just creative thoughts that lead from one interesting point to another. its still early days though so there is still alot more development that im going through.

4. For any fresh newbie producers like myself, what’s encouraged you to continue with your music productions?

Basically just as a hobby. music has become my life in the last 12 months and i guess that passion for new and experimental ways of creating music has pushed me on. It’s actually taken my by surprise that amount of good feedback that I have been getting so this has also influenced me to keep making music.

5. Any big projects in the works?

Hopefully getting an EP together soon now that I have some spare time on my hands – No dates are set for anything yet..but in the next couple of months or so. I’ve actually set up a few collabs with some other beat makers so there should be some interesting stuff coming up in the very near future.

6. Favorite phrase at the moment?

“you cant get anywhere unless you start” – the back of my bus ticket.

1. What’s it like in Russia? I’ve never been..

Russia the country of mad people, all rush against each other, it is not enough calmness, the love to a rap too hasn’t enough! At us this culture tried to eradicate some times, but we live and we do that that we do. 🙂

2. How would you describe your music as Makes Van?

The beginning! I only begin, I write only one and a half year, I have a bad sound card, standard in the old computer, FL Studio, mouse and keyboard. All most is hot ahead. 🙂

3. What’s the best show you saw in 2010?

I don’t go on concerts! I live in a province. All stars arrive to Moscow, MF Doom, Wu tang, Ev and Alc, Meth and Red, Public Enemy, Talib Kweli and others. Very much I want to take part in Red Bull Big Tune!

4. Best encouragement you’ve gotten as an artist?

In Russia it is a lot of with whom I work, basically with known rappers. Has now started to work with USA. Axe butane, Mateo, DJDX, and others. And in general would like to cooperate with Sean Price and Prodigy (Mobb Deep)

Two Instrumentals albums and one will be with invited rappers. In work on an album will take part Russian and American rappers, I will be as Producer.
