I was into this guy’s set at Zippy’s Java Lounge in Everett, Washington-He sent over his album entitled “Awful”, and I have a few tracks off that for ya’ll.

Interview.

1. You’ve just finished an album, congratulations! Was there a overall theme or mood you were going for with this release?

Thanks! I don’t know if there was really a theme, at least not one I had in mind. 8 of the tracks were made in a relatively short span of time, so I think they just came out being consistent for that reason. The other 2 (the tracks called Claude and Ms. Inose) are older (maybe like half a year old) but I used them because I really felt good about them. So, generally speaking, I was in the same mindset while programming the whole thing. I guess that’s as close to a theme as I got, just hearing a certain thing in my head and trying to tap into that.

2. How were you introduced to electronic music?

I guess electronic music was always around me (crazy synth in Reading Rainbow, car commercial music, NES music, et cetera), but the first time it was really called to my attention as an entity of its own was when I was maybe 11 years old. My cousin had some “techno” CDs and I listened to one song, and it was just kind of dumb stuff. I’d probably dislike it now, too. Cheesy samples and stuff. A little after that, an older guy (well, he was like 15) I really looked up to at my church gave me a CD by Joy Electric, but my mom didn’t like it, so I wasn’t allowed to hear it haha. When it actually became accessible was when I found out about Fighter X, he played shows in my little town and stuff. That’s when I got actually interested.

3. Currently who are some of your favorite artists?

I guess I’ve been really into DODDODO for quite a while. She’s really awesome, and I still haven’t burnt out on her stuff for quite a while. The other electronic stuff I’ve been into the most is Maruosa, Sphyramid, Saskrotch, and Abortifacient. Also Albatrosicks, a really over the top J-pop band. Non electronic stuff I like a lot right now is Cibo Matto, Rin Toshite Shigure, nhhmbase, Ghosts and Vodka, and I guess I just got back into the Smashing Pumpkins haha.

4. What do you love about music?

That’s really tough! It’s not something I have really thought about, I guess. It’s just something I have to do, I guess, because that’s how my brain is wired. Playing music is kind of like problem solving for me, I guess. putting everything together in a form that feels “correct,” even though that’s totally subjective. Then when I’m happy with it, I can share it with other people. It’s a challenge for myself, and it’s both public and private. So, those are things I really like about it.

5. Any last words?

Nothing really comes to mind, I guess. I think I already said too much haha.

I’m diggin all these phantom-y references :]

It’s nice to mix things up. This time i’m highlighting the Ghost Clothing company-putting out some krazy kool designs for all ya’ll to sport.

Interview.

1. First off, I think it’s kool that I found you, the whole phantom/ghost thing is so fitting! What made you come up with the idea of starting a clothing company?

I’m studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, and I’m very like creating graphics. T-shirts and their designs have always been my passion, so I wanted to take it seriously. Together with my friend, who supported me and helps me all the time, we created the Ghost Clothing. For us, passion is the main purpose.

2. Where are you from?

I’m from Poland.

3. Who are some of your favorite artists?

Difficult to answer this question, because I appreciate many artists. Musicians and painters. The world is full of great and eminent creators, but I think that a lot of people kept excellent works at home, so we can’t see their talent.

4. Any big plans for Ghost Clothing in 2010?

We’re planning to further develop Ghost Clothing, we know that we still have a lot of things to change, enlarge our assortment, improve the ordering system and refine our site. I hope that we’ll do that. I’m relying on other people, because there’s nothing more delightful than making fun of other people, through the graphics you’ve created.

Keep it fresh,

DJ Phantom

Local Seattle-based artist!

Interview.

1. How long have the two of you been making music as American Werewolf?

We started “officially” making music as a a duo about a year an a half under the guise “Phantom Power.” We later changed our name to American Werewolf for no good reason.

2. You are a part of Simplify Records, tell us about this label..

Simplify Recordings is a local (Seattle) label founded by Aaron Simpson. Simplify is a multi-genre label focusing on everything from Drum and Bass to Electro. It has been a pleasure working with simplify, and we hope to do more work with them in the future.

3. How were you first introduced to electronic music?

For me (Kevin) i was into music like Depeche Mode, and Nine inch nails early on, and have always liked the electronic element provided by groups like that. I went to my first rave in 1999, and fell in love with what was going on there. I started Dj’ing in late 2000, and it slowly developed into what we are doing now. It was a natural progression.

4. Is there a central theme or certain ideas you are going for with American Werewolf?

I think our central theme is to make music that we like. We are definitely a product of our influences, but ultimately it’s just fun to do and we love synthesizers.

5. What are some of your plans for 2010?

You can expect some genre-bending from American Werewolf in 2010… Nothing is out of the question. We are also starting a series of events dedicated to live electronic acts, and the first one will be held at Space in Seattle on May 28th… find us on Facebook/Myspace for more info (shameless plug)

Just got back from the Seattle screening of ODDSAC, the visual album pioneered by the very nifty Animal Collective and directed by Danny Perez.

In ten years Animal Collective has developed into quite the group. I’m just now appreciating their music, and a friend of mine, Cael, has helped to solidify my interest.

There latest project is a whopping 4 years in the making! The dark psychedelic journey through ODDSAC was really something, mixed reactions from the crowd-but I think that’s when it’s really interesting and pushes your ideas of what a film should be.

Keep an eye out for the DVD release!
