When I first saw the lineup for Decibel Festival 2012, Actress stood out as my #1 artist to see. I insist you attend the XLR8R Presents showcase, where Actress will headline live (tix available here). His music transports my mind to bizarre and new places. Mixing techno, house, dubstep and experimental music with an other-worldly perspective, his music constantly challenges me. Genre boxes seem so limiting to what he does, and I encourage you to push off from these reference points as you listen. His album’s “R.I.P.” and “Splazsh” are distinct entities, and it would benefit you to also hear his “Hazyville” lp.  He’s an enigma of sorts; laying out a sonic environment that few come near.

I saw Teengirl Fantasy here in Seattle a little while ago at The Vera Project and was delightfully impressed. This 2-piece group from the U.S. performs live with no laptops or backing tracks. I remember being amazed at their ability to effortlessly produce their dance floor intended songs on the spot. Their off-kilter reflection of house music took me a second to get used to, but after more listens I’ve come to respect their aesthetic.

Gulls from Portland, Oregon will be opening the show. He runs Boomarm Nation; a collective of artists putting out “experimental sound system music”. Feels like a fitting way to round out this lineup.

Gotta go with the Surefire Presents showcase for Day Two of Decibel Festival 2012. After hearing 2 Boiler Room sets from Objekt, he’s instantly become one of my favorite DJ’s, behind Erol Alkan and Pearson Sound aka Ramadanman (who co-runs Hessle Audio, the consistently unique label which released Objekt’s Cactus/Porcupine) . These sets move in unexpected ways, inducing a hypnotic journey rather than an aimless collection of tracks. I’ve posted his 40 minute set, but I suggest you head over to the Boiler Room site, make a free account if you haven’t already, and view his 60 minute set. Both are intriguing to say the least, but the latter mix really got to me.

As a producer, Objekt melds techno, dubstep, house, garage and 2-step in fearless ways. I’m eager to see this dude DJ at The Baltic Room come September.

Also on the lineup, we have Kuedo, performing a live set.

Pulling from the visions of Blade Runner, combined with dreamy interpretations of southern hip-hop, rap and footwork, his album Severant (Planet Mu Records) was released in October of last year.

XXXY opens the show with a live set as well.

Over the next few weeks, Disco Droppings will focus on each day of Decibel Festival 2012, choosing one showcase that you must see. My recommendation is that you buy a dB pass as opposed to purchasing individual showcases. The current price is $225 for a 5-day pass (45 per day is pretty damn cheap). With the pass you have access to 35 club showcases, 5 Optical showcases, 3 dB Films and the 3-day dB Conference. Now that I’ve gone through the entire list of dB artists performing this year, I’ll be doing my part to share their sounds here on Disco Droppings. Keep your eyes here over the next 2 months, for an in-depth look at several artists you’ll see at the end of September for Decibel Festival 2012 in Seattle.

Now, I’m all about Clark. Some of you may remember my recent post on his brilliant “Turning Dragon” album. When I found out he was playing this year for the Warp Showcase (Warp Records is the beyond legendary label who has released music from Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Broadcast, Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi, Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Mount Kimbie, Prefuse 73, Squarepusher and the 3 artists playing this showcase to name a few) I was sooooooooo hyped! With all the material Clark has, I can’t guess what this live set will sound like (I’ve been told he’s heavy). He’s the type artist you’d rarely see around these parts, and someone I thought I’d never experience live.

Joining Clark, we have Jimmy Edgar. Detroit-based techno artist influenced by funk, jazz and r&b. At 18 he was picked up by Warp Records, and has been putting out slick releases ever since. Sounds like this will be a sexy, sweaty set.

Raising the BPM to staggering levels at times, we have Machinedrum. I heard him last year at Decibel Festival with Ital Tek, witnessing a pounding 140-160 BPM collection of tunes. Dude is a genius with more output than I can keep track of. You may recognize “Fantastix” from Azealia Banks’ savage new mixtape, Fantasea (Machiendrum beats can be heard w/ Azealia on “Aquababe”, “NEEDSUMLUV”, “Van Vogue” and “Grand Scam”).

I will be opening this showcase..

DD Welcome to Disco Droppings! What got you interested in DJ’ing, and how has your style developed over time?

S We have Deee Lite, who performed at a Dallas, TX warehouse rave that I attended in 1991, to thank for my young, budding interest in electronic music. I stayed on the dancefloor for the next 8 years. And, then in 1999, I witnessed DRC throw down a blinding set, and thought “Wow chicks can be amazing dj’s…why can’t I?” So, I started out playing a smattering of Hard Trance and NRG, because (not gonna try to make myself all elitist) that’s what I was into 12 years ago. And, I think, like most dj’s when they first start, I wasn’t very good at beat matching, reading a crowd or even truly enjoying myself. Soon, though, I progressed to a life of very serious, very hard techno…and I mean serious. Right around the year 2001 I was lucky enough  to meet an amazing production crew in Vancouver B.C. called Soundproof and bonded with one of Soundproof’s finest, and my first “dj soul mate”, Son of Jacob (Trevor Jacobson). I was invited to play at some of their elaborately, insane parties and that’s where I really learned how to have fun behind the decks.

Fast forward to today…Trevor and his partner Tanya Goehring are now producing some very beautifully, dark, very serious techno under the name The Automatic Message. I, on the other hand have gone down an entirely different path. After moving from Bellingham, WA to Portland, OR and meeting the love of my life, Carrie; I realized, through her that a dj is a vehicle for the party and it is really just about having the time of your life at that moment.  People want to smile and dance and forget about their troubles…escape.  At a very memorable after party for the S.E.C.T. show in Portland, hosted by Alga Rhythms, I was lucky enough to geek out on disco and play some records with another “dj soul mate”- Charlie Levine of Soul Clap. Partially, as a result of the S.E.C.T. party, my “dj sister”and best friend,The Perfect Cyn (Cynthia Valenti,) and I were asked to record a mix for The Adventure of Soul Clap Podcast that just came out at the beginning of September.

At this very moment (I mean right now, as you are reading this most likely),  I am on a never ending quest for a dance floor filled with folks getting down to deep house, obscure disco re-edits and an all around soulful vibe.  I spend a lot of time and resources finding music on vinyl that make people happy and have a good time.

DD What has your experience been with Decibel Festival in the past?

S You know, I just want to say that Decibel has really put the Pacific Northwest on the map for Electronic music.  I, shamefully, missed the first one but in subsequent years have had the pleasure of catching some of the artists that have been pretty damn influential.  One of my all time favorite Decibel shows was the showcase Akufen performed at in 2004.  He has been, and still is, one of my truly favorite artist and to experience him with all my friends just getting down and having a great time in a truly well produced environment was  pretty ridiculously awesome.  That’s just it about Decibel, it’s not just about top notch talent but really great detail to design and presentation.  Plus, what other festival in the world do I get to experience my fellow Cascadia dj and producer friends doing their thing on the “International Stage”?

DD How did your set go at Decibel Festival?

S Having the opportunity to dj with my partner in crime, The Perfect Cyn, alongside what I consider my dream line-up for a party was simply incredible!  I’m, seriously, still glowing from the afternoon and it’s almost been a month since it has happened.  We were playing as the boat left docked…boy, what a feeling.  The fun I had was second to none mainly because of all the friends on the dancefloor (meaning all y’all) truly throwing inhibitions off and showing that the Pacific Northwest can do it proper.

DD Favorite mix right now?

S My favorite mix right now is..

The Adventures of Soul Clap: Episode 91 with Soho808

I adore the tracks presented and the kicker here is the that you hear the snaps and crackles of first record and it even skips within the first 2 minutes.  I really do love vinyl!
