Clark – XLR8R Podcast & Upcoming Decibel Show 11/26/13

Clark, Clark, motherfuckin’ Clark. It’s surreal to say that just last year I played alongside this revolutionary producer for Decibel Festival 2012. Alongside Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum, we represented the Warp Records Showcase. I tried with all my might to create a mix that would compliment these awe-inspiring artists, and the experience helped my art evolve to new heights in a very short period.

Fresh off the press, I was so excited to see Clark in charge of the latest XLR8R podcast. I’m always curious about what this dude is up to, and now I have new insight. It’s a bizarre, adventurous mix, demonstrating Clark’s wonderfully twisted perspective that I’ve come to love dearly.

For those of you living in the Seattle area, Decibel will be bringing Clark back towards the end of November. Jon Hopkins headlines with support from Nathan Fake. No way in hell I’m missin’ this.

Night Slugs – Club Constructions Vol.4 (Helix) & Vol. 5 (Hysterics)

I think Bok Bok and the Night Slugs crew nailed it with these new Club Constructions releases. So many good things to say! First off we have Helix, Georgia based producer of Club Constructions Vol. 4. His cold, metallic, minimal production style is brilliant here. Deceivingly simple, highly effective music that will dirty up any set in the best way. “Track Titled 1” reminds of Daft Punk’s Alive 1997, their tour around Homework. There’s a part, starting to build around 13 minutes with similar chord stabs.

Hysterics unleashed Club Constructions Vol. 5 yesterday, and the stripped back, industrial rave of the future continues. Girl Unit’s new alias is manacing! I hope the Night Slugs are ushering in a time for this brand of sinister Techno. The label’s description of the release clues you into the production process, “The three cuts on this volume are the result of an experimental production processes, incorporating tape feedback, raw drums punched in manually and percussive parts that are allowed to take unusual lead roles….The resulting recordings are intricate but highly robust rhythm trax.”

I really feel like this, along with the Helix release are lighting the way for dance music of the future. We need things to be more primal, step back from the forced euphoria, and just work that rhythm and bass.

Maya Jane Coles – 2nd Essential Mix

This chick is somethin’ else. I wrote about her first Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 in 2012; a set that raised the bar for holding a consistent sonic theme. She really blew me away with that one, expanding my understanding of possibilities in the DJ realm. Well she is back, invited by Pete Tong to showcase yet another 2 hour mix. Many artists dream of one day being featured on the Essential Mix, and Maya Jane Coles clearly shows she’s worth another go.

The standout track to me comes in about halfway through her set, Daniel Stefanik’s remix of Marbert Rocel’s “Small Hours”..

Maya’s debut album Comfort will be released next month..

Atoms For Peace – Essential Mix

I’m cleaning my very messy room, while re-listening to the Atoms For Peace Essential Mix. Throwing away trash, organizing pieces and making space to breathe is a fitting analogy for what Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich have done in this 2-hour exploration. These songs have a distinct place in the musical landscape, not grasping onto cliches and instead taking you deep into the mind and nature of the world around you. On a production and sound quality level, I feel this is one of the more superior Essential Mixes created, since the series began in 1993.

I remember the first time I heard this mix, it was 4 am. I was so entranced by what I heard. Lying in bed with my headphones on, I felt like I was floating in this ocean of sound. I listened through the whole thing, and at 6 am thought, “what the fuck just happened?”. It was wonderful, and it is that kind of reaction that I hold onto as an artist.

It was a Disclosure kind of morning for me; bright, sexy and slick. This UK duo, comprised of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence is absolutely destroying everything. The production quality and song structure coming from these dudes blows my mind. They have a debut album set for release on PMR Records anytime now. Nothing else to say, just listen and feel it for yourself.
