Archives for the month of: April, 2012

Cheers to all you lucky fellows with Zomby’s 12″ reissue for Record Store Day. If you can’t find the vinyl, get this shit in digital or cd form, “Where Were U In ’92?” has become a very influential record to me as a producer. I was able to work the Zomby show at Decibel Festival 2011, he was kind to me and it was an honor to be in the presence of a musical genius. With a raw and unflinching attitude, Zomby is an artist to cherish.

First off, happy 420. Admin is back for a second time on Disco Droppings. Catch up and learn about his upcoming releases below. One thing not mentioned in the interview is his remix of Mike G‘s “Boost”, out in June on Car Crash Set. Keep your ears tuned, this track may appear in upcoming dj sets of mine.

DD Welcome back Adam. What have you been up to since I talked to you in September 2011? It’s been a little while!

A Thanks for having me back! Since we last spoke I’ve been working on some new tracks, playing some sets and just generally chilling. Met some great people this year already and I can’t wait for the summer. Going to be a good ‘un!

DD 2 new tracks of yours on Soundcloud are forthcoming, the labels releasing them have not been announced yet . There’s “Behind You” and “Hustle Me” which I’m especially fond of. How did you go about finding a place for these to be officially released?

A I always try to make sure that I can reply to everyone that messages me about tunes, and a lot of people do! I always appreciate the feedback, and when a label asks if I can send any demos I always make sure I do, even if it is a bit later on in the future. I owe a lot to Soundcloud, I don’t think I would be so confident making music without the support I’ve had from people on there. But yeah, whenever I’m happy with a track I’ll send it about to hear what people think…

DD What’s been inspiring you lately?

A Film and cinematography, strong images and stories really inspire me. and the support from my friends.

DD Last words? Pleasure having you on DD.

A Thanks again, keep listening. :]

Spotlight on Altrac Productions for creating this new video. If you enjoy the tune, there’s a free download here. Interview with Kid Smpl below..

DD 3rd time here on Disco Droppings, this time for a new music video for “Keep It Close”. How’s your week been so far?

KS Been pretty low-key so far, definitely a relaxing week.

DD How did you first connect with Sawyer and Altrac Productions? How much input did you give for the style of shooting and the environment shown?

KS Sawyer and I met our freshman year of college so we’ve known each other for about 4 years now, long before our music and film careers were going anywhere haha.

I didn’t give too much input on the creative direction of the video however that was completely out of choice. Both Sawyer and Ben at Altrac have a really solid understanding of my music and how I like it to be presented so it doesn’t take too much input from myself in order for them to make a video that I like.

DD I saw a mention of a visual collaboration with Altrac Productions next month. Can you mention any more of those details? Which show?

KS Yep! really excited for that. The visual collaboration will be part of an event called 4X4 that will be happening at the Northwest Film Forum on May 24th. Don’t want to give away too many details but I will be performing a live set accompanied by live projections by Altrac. It should be really interesting.

It’s time to feature Dreams, of the 6bit collective. His productions are warm and soooo smooth, it’s a pleasure to have him on Disco Droppings. We talk about his releases, being included on Rustie’s Essential Mix and such. I suggest you pick up the Flyte EP and Generation Y Not compilation, where Dreams has contributed some music.

DD Hi Dreams. What are you up to right now?

DR Getting packed and ready to take a road trip to San Francisco, I’m playing a gig up there with Wu Lyf on Tuesday. Also watching youtube vids of forest raves.

DD Your track “Bloodsport”, from the Flyte Ep was featured in Rustie’s magnificent essential mix. Is this the first time you’ve interacted with the producer? Your styles compliment each other so well.

DR Yes. And a great first interaction it is! I’d love to remix a Rustie song or collab on something in the future.

DD You’re featured on the Generation Y Not compilation, which was just released on 4.3.12 through Jaxart Records, Absent Fever and Portals. How would you describe this release and the artists represented?

DR Well, it’s essentially a showcase of young LA artists who all happen to somehow know each other through music. Some of us are producers and the others are bands, so it ranges in genres, but they’re all talented dudes. Wondr, Eliot, and Caves are all part of the same collective I’m in, 6bit.

DD What emotional themes run through your music? It has a very warm, nostalgic feel to me.

DR It really depends on the mood I’m in. I generally like making more upbeat, energy filled tunes, and you can expect to see a bit of a step in a new direction this year.

DD At this time in music, age has no say in an artist being able to present a strong vision and establish themselves. The Weeknd has just turned 22, Skrillex is 24 and James Blake is 23. You are 20 and off to a terrific start. Who encouraged you to chase after your dreams at a young age?

DR No one specifically, besides myself. However all these young artists like the ones you mentioned are proper motivation to keep pursuing what I love. I’m grateful everything has gone so well in just the first year and a half of producing, and i have so much respect for artists who have been around for years…it’s definitely a grind. All I can say is I’m very excited for the rest of this year and the chance to drop some new music.

If you’re a UW student, there’s about to be a nuts party this Thursday. The Husky Pavilion Tent will be hosting The Rapture, who will be doing a DJ set alongside DJ Self-Actualized and Rainy Dawg Radio. I saw The Rapture open for Daft Punk way back in 2007, and I’ve DJ’ed alongside DJ Self-Acutalized, he’s good! UW students this is not something to miss!
