There are wonderful things happening in Vancouver, Canada, and HxdB is a prime example. I talk with the prolific producer about 2 releases that got me hyped. Enjoy learning about Booyant / Amphibian and Hoof Hearted / New Style ..and if they move you, pick em up!

DD The “Booyant/Amphibian” release on Tectonic is very rad. I played “Amphibian” as well as the Archie Pelago remix of “Booyant” (which is mind-blowing) in my last set, and plan to play them a whole lot more. How did working with Distal encourage and challenge you?

HX Well, Mike and I each approach production very differently, in addition to the fact we both use different sequencers. So when we actually got down to starting our collaborations in the studio, we approached it very organically. We had great synergy straight away, each person allowing the other to take the reigns when needed. We were both really flexible imposing our ideas and I think that’s why we were able to come up with 2 very unique and distinct tunes. It’s safe to say we both learned a lot from each other in terms of techniques and overall vibes. Working with another person in the studio is always an interesting challenge since you have to learn each person’s workflow and level of comfort taking and giving orders, heheh.

DD Both of us have experience managing labels, do you feel this gives you a unique perspective on the music community and how you would like to contribute to it?

HX TBH, I don’t think my perspective has changed much from when I began to now. I have always been very fortunate to have an extensive network of peers and friends creating incredible music from which to tap. Certainly, from a contribution stand-point, I am afforded the freedom to promote the sounds that move me. I really didn’t have the chance to do that before becoming involved with Gradient Audio

DD You mentioned in a past interview that a Daega Sound set, as well as Skream’s performance at a past Shambhala got you re-interested in producing. Daega Sound was on my blog a little while back, and I’ve become a huge fan of Skream recently. How do you feel these artists present their own distinct style? I dig the forthcoming Daega Sound/Kid Smpl No Northwest Cycle 2 EP #3, out now on Car Crash Set..

HX You can hear when an artist or group has “found” their groove. It is clear when you hear acts like Daega or Skream, that their brand is their sound. They stick to their guns and have a clear vision of what they would like to accomplish with their art. It’s inspiring and potent. Keep your ears peeled for a forthcoming collaboration 12″ with Daega and HxdB soon too! We’ve just wrapped up the first project and it’s VERY exciting.

DD I also enjoyed this “Hoof Hearted/New Stylee” release you did with Self Evident, out now on Palms Out Sounds. With support from Canblaster, Distal, Dubbel Dutch and Salva, that’s quite the stamp of approval. “New Stylee” is super badass, a fitting name for such a fresh and inspired track. What’s the environment like when you and Self Evident work together, compared to Distal?

HX Ben and I are like Voltron in the studio. Two, individually unique producers become a JUGGERNAUT when combined, hehehe. Seriously though, we love working together so much since our dynamic is so unique. The way we develop ideas is so natural and we’re constantly striving to push the boundaries of our individual sounds and make sure that our collaborations have their own distinct edge. We’ve just wrapped up yet another song, which is if I’m not mistaken our tenth song together! In comparison to working with Mike though, I would say it comes down to symantics. Mike is a genius when it comes to programming, where Ben is a genius when it comes to sample mining. Both are equal-parts genius when it comes to vision.

DD You opened a recent Night Slugs showcase in Vancouver. I made a point to work at their showcase for Decibel Festival last year, definitely my favorite event to witness. What’s your favorite release from them?

HX Anything by Mosca really. I just love how his songs are so incredibly meticulously designed but still have that stipped back sound. I guess you could say “Nike” is my fave….What an epic journey that song is!

DD Last words?

HX I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has supported me over the years. All of my wonderful friends, family and fans. All of my mentors and peers that have taught me SO much, taught me the value of being true to yourself and remaining humble. I love eveyone, especially my haters. Oh, and fuck Monsanto.

Did a fun interview with Slick Shoota. Found him through Mosca’s “Following” section on Soundcloud, guys got fine taste. We talk about his recently released “Percussion Skank” EP on Mad Decent Jeffree’s (download for free here), his favorite juke phrases and how he dances to these high energy trax. Also, grab his previously released 8 Bit Beauty EP on Loose Squares..

DD Welcome to Disco Droppings Slick Shoota. How are you doing?

SS Thank you, this sure is a lovely place you got here! I’m doing quite well, just sitting in the studio trying to finish some tracks you know!

DD Your track “Rasta” was played recently on BBC Radio 1’s “Diplo & Friends” show. This is a part of your “Percussion Skank” EP released on Mad Decent Jeffrees on 4.26.12. I think it’s rad! How do you feel being a part of this sub label for up and coming talent? Who came up with the artwork?

SS I’m super excited about the Percussion Skank EP. I think Mad Decent are being very clever when pushing their releases as 192kbps free downloads. This means they easily can spread the music to their huge fanbase. They also got a monthly subscription you can sign up to where you’ll get all the Jeffree’s releases upfront in wav/320, as well as other exclusives. For me as an artist this results in great exposure, so I’m really happy with that.

The whole EP came about when Paul Devro messaged me and asked me if I wanted to release some music with them. He does most of the Jeffree’s business, and he also does the artwork. The process was a pretty short but hilarious e-mail exchange, where he had a million ideas. At one point he wanted to put a real picture of me naked, drinking 40 oz beers, but I was like naah, put a dolphin in there instead, haha. I’m pretty happy with it, i like having a cartoonish vibe on my artworks, it’s just fun and nothing too serious, just the way I like it.

DD Juke is so fun for me to listen to. It’s hilarious and infinitely entertaining to hear phrases like “everywhere I go, I see the same ho” and “bitch I ain’t your boyfriend, bitch I ain’t your man, bitch I ain’t your boyfriend cant you understand” (I was just listening to DJ Assault) over and over again. Any phrases you especially love hearing/working with?

SS Yeah man I just love it when you hear a big new tune with some crazy lyrics in them, can’t help but brock out and smile at the same time.

Three outrageous favorites include..

1. “I beat the pussy up” DJ Pillsbury – Can’t Get Enough

2. “Shawty off the chain mane” and “she thick as hell” DJ Spinn & DJ Rashad – Shawty Off The Chain

3. “I love it when you blow me bitch” EQ Why – Suck My Dick

DD In that Scratcha DVA Rinse.fm bit on your soundcloud, I laughed a lot. Really fun guy. He mentions not being sure how to dance to juke. There isn’t a specific way, but do you usually bounce around frantically to the beat, or dance at half tempo?

SS I love that clip as well, I was a regular listener to his Grimey Breakfast show as he really is hilarious. He’s also a great dj and producer, so having him supporting my tracks is flattering.

As to dancing, I’m by no means a great dancer, I  just brock out whatever way I feel like there and then. If you are feeling the music, you’ll probably manage to dance to it as well, innit.

DD You collaborated with Cedaa on the “Windbreaker” track. Cedaa has become a local favorite of mine, seeing him jump onto Fade To Mind and receive props on an international level for his progressive style is inspiring. How’d you guys meet, and what did he add to the creative process when you worked together?

SS Cedaa is a badman. He was the very first person to send me a message on Soundcloud actually, and we traded tunes. He was doing some stuff with French label B.YRSLF at the time and he put them on to me, and in march last year i released a free promo through them, which was Pussyclot Funk Dem and the Night Hunter remix. So major props to Cedaa and B.YRSLF for that. When Cedaa was preparing his Jasmin EP for them a while after that, we hooked up for a collab. It was really cool to work with the track. He sent me a project he had going, full of his trademark synths and effects. I went in on it and added drums and some jungle vibes. I really like how the track rolled out. I think the track was kinda slept on, but i still enjoy playing it!

DD I’m having fun listening through your tracks while playing Super Mario World for the SNES. Actually, a juke remix of one of these levels songs could work well, the one with the bongos in it. Have you thought about it?

SS Haha, no I have to say I haven’t thought of that. But I do enjoy some 8-bit every once in a while. My track “8 Bit Beauty” is on that vibe. I also like bongos, so I’ll go as far and say that it’s not unlikely, that someday, it can happen that I make a track with some sounds that might resemble a Super Mario sound and also have bongos in it. Close enough ?

DD I have to take a moment and mention this “Bug A Boo” remix you did entitled “Bug A Stick”. This is genius! What’s your favorite track and/or video from them? Mines “Hey Ladies” and “Say My Name”..

SS Thank you! Bug a Boo is definitely one of my favorite tracks by them. Their a cappella’s are amazing. I happened to have the a cappella of it lying around. I also happen to be a big fan of Martyn, and was listening to his Great Lengths album a lot around the same time I did the remix. I’m surprised no one has mentioned it before, so I might as well let it out myself, check out Martyn’s track “Bridge” for the piano sample i used. I also have to mention their track “Cards Never Lie” that track is a vibe and a half man!

DD What do you hope to showcase with your forthcoming releases?

SS I’m in the middle of a release spree right about now. I released my debut EP on Loose Squares in March, followed up with the Percussion Skank in April and I got a new EP forthcoming on Hyperboloid Records. That EP will include “Draw” that’s been supported on BBC Radio 1 by Martelo and B Traits. I’ve also done several remixes that’s doing the rounds. What I hope to showcase is that I can’t be pinpointed to one type of sound. I like to make mellow vibey stuff, I like to make bleepy hard stuff and everything in between. I’m just gonna keep on doing what I do and hopefully people will enjoy it!

DD Last words?

SS Thanks to Disco Droppings and everyone else showing me support, you really are awesome. Also, look out for my next EP on Hyperboloid Records. I also got a video forthcoming and Slick Shoota tee-shirts are in the making. Watch this space!

The Clairvoyants put together my favorite show on Rinse.fm – I’ve put together a lengthy interview with one of the members. Have fun learning about these dedicated fellows, and jump over to RA for their May 2012 “Top Ten” chart..

DD The Clairvoyants is a 3 piece, dj/producer group, which of you will be chatting with Disco Droppings today?

SBR Hi, as you say, The Clairvoyants consists of 3 members…

Jason H, Shax & myself, SBR

DD Every time I’ve caught your Rinse.fm show I get sucked in. You may have seen my shoutouts to the station while your on the air :] The pulsing beats and dark, throbbing atmosphere are something you can lose yourself in. Do you strive for these kinds of feelings and reactions to your show?

SBR Most definitely, compiling our sets is like a doing jig-saw puzzle and the tracks are the pieces so they have to fit together in tandem.

We try to look at the bigger picture we want to create, then select the tracks needed to create it, so each track we play whether old or new has a purpose and hopefully when compiled and mixed has the desired effect on our listeners.

It also liberates us from the monotony of being restricted to only playing the most recent top 20 hits week in week out.

What you described is our signature sound or theme…

Deep, dark almost hypnotic!

It’s definitely aimed at those who like to listen and are intrigued by sound. Sometimes it takes a couple of tracks to build up momentum but the aim is to have people fully immersed and lost in the sound for the duration of the show. A good indicator is whether you can remember the track played before last, try it… if you can’t then you’ve been sucked in and are under our control ha!

There’s a big screen on the studio wall with a live twitter feed running, which enables us to see people’s comments as they come through so thanks to everyone including yourself who messages in during the show!

DD I really enjoyed Roberto‘s guest mix from 3.25.12. How do you go about choosing guest dj/producers to showcase a mix? Are there certain labels who have been represented significantly through multiple artist mixes?

SBR The Perc Trax label has had a big input in the guests aspect of the show.

We’ve had Perc (Perc Trax label boss) up as a guest on more than one occasion, Truss who has released music on the label has guested on the show many times and we’ve also had Sigha as a guest who come to think of it has released on there too!

Affin a German-based label is another we’re building a rapport with…
Roberto whose mix you mentioned is affiliated to Affin as is Chris Page, who is due to guest on the show and Joachim Spieth (Affin label owner) has agreed to do a mix for us in the near future.

We’ve also had representatives of both the Hypercolour and EarToGround labels as guests on the show.

The primary criterion for our guests has been that they’ve been artists we feel and who bring something different but complimentary to the show.

With the show recently being extended by an hour we hope to utilize that time to feature as many guests as possible who meet that criteria and you’ll be pleased to know Roberto has agreed to come back again!

DD What’s it like at the Rinse.fm station? I imagine it constantly buzzing with activity..

SBR The office is situated by the studio, so in the day time there’s always something going on, different artists passing by etc.

They also have the Rinse academy taking place where 14-19 year olds can take crash courses in music production and radio presenting and obviously you have the DJs doing their shows. Things are more tranquil by the time we go there to do our show, at least until we start playing anyway!

DD Last words?

SBR Thanks to all at Disco Droppings on behalf of The Clairvoyants for taking time out to check out the show and getting in touch with us. Respect to the Rinse FM management team and a special mention to all the people who appreciate and support what we do!

It was inspiring to go through Mosca’s catalog and just get enveloped by it. A search of his past interviews will show a focus on releases such as the Square One EP (Night Slugs), The Wavey EP (3024), and Tilt Shift (Fat City). In this interview, Mosca gives some sound advice for young producers, and chats about his new “Eva Mendes EP” set for release on Hypercolour this month.

DD Hi there Mosca, thank you for stopping by Disco Droppings. What are you doing right now?

M I’m on my way to a rave in Edinburgh then off to Helsinki.

DD You’ve created some astounding tunes, I won’t go back to these releases, but one thing I want to chat with you about is mindset and individuality. For all these young producers, who are genuinely interested in establishing themselves and contributing to the world of music, how would you challenge them? Many of the artists I’ve featured on Disco Droppings have incredible potential, and could learn from your perspective.

M I would say that the internet is a blessing and a curse. You know about the upsides, but it also means a trend is in one month and out the next, and it’s easy for people to send stuff they want you to hear, and write about the next big thing. It’s easy to get sucked into all that and I see people making identical music and playing identical sets. My advice would just be concentrate on music you love. So once you’ve read this blog, stop trawling blogs, stop facebooking, just immerse yourself in your own world of music. Put the time in.

DD In honor of this feature, i’ve included your “Sing” remix, “Nike (Club Edit)” and “Square One” in my upcoming 2 hour set on Cinco De Mayo. Many people in the audience may be hearing futuristic/unconventional club music for the first time. Do you remember playing specific shows where the crowd knew they were hearing something fresh and were ready for you to take them somewhere new?

M Generally the dances where the crowd doesn’t know the music are the dances that I clear floors at. It’s a slow process and maybe not as romantic as you’re making out!

DD I’m hyped on your forthcoming Eva Mendes EP for Hypercolour this month. Disco Droppings interviewed 214 aka J.Alvaraz, who has a forthcoming release on Hypercolour. Also, the Maya Jane Coles Essential mix from last year has been played sooooo many times in my car, I love sharing it with people. What do you find most inspiring about this label/group of artists?

M They know they don’t have to be Jamie Jones to get on in the house world.

DD Incredible that you worked with Robert Owens on “Accidentally”. This new Hypercolour release seems to cover the past, present and future of house seamlessly. Do you feel that?

M Robert Owens isn’t the past of house music. He’s as active now as he ever was, with DJing and performing as well as recording. I would say that yes, the EP is something along the lines of the present state of house music, but nothing more. There’ll be a lot more house from me, some deeper stuff, some techier stuff, as well as all the other genres I’m into.

DD Will there be a “Eva Mendes” EP launch party and tour on the way? Any plans to make it out to the west coast? Seattle would love to see you!

M I’m constantly playing shows so a tour is always happening, I’m always testing new Mosca material that people don’t know is me yet. But no plans for an Eva Mendes tour or anything stateside for now.

DD Last words?

M Nah I’m fine thanks!

Thanks to Rustie, I found Obey City. His tracks “Work Move” and “Fallin” are both featured in his Essential Mix. I couldn’t find these tunes outside the mix, but I’ve included some rad Obey City productions with his interview for Disco Droppings.

DD Both of us have applied for the Red Bull Music Academy 2012. Best of luck to you! I be your demo was very impressive. What attracted you to RBMA, and who would you like to learn from in the artist lectures?

OC Thanks man, good luck to you as well. RBMA just seems like an ideal place to learn more about music production and the industry. The artists who have attended have gone on to do great things and the lecturers they bring in are top class. Plus they always pick a great city to host it. I’m sure all of the lecturers they bring will be amazing, but I think I said my top three dream lecturers would be Aphex Twin, Quincy Jones and Prince.

DD Did you know in advance you’d be featured in Rustie’s Essential Mix? I’ve been following him for a little while, and following up his album release with the Joker and Surkin remixes is soo incredible.

OC No I had no idea, in fact someone texted me to tell me I was included before I even got a chance to listen myself. It’s one of the most impressive mixes I’ve heard in a long time and it was a really great feeling to be a part of it.

DD Where is the ideal place to experience Obey City live?

OC I think it’s probably less about where and more about who is there, because I think the crowd really has the ability to change the vibe of the entire club/bar/space. However, a spot with a great sound system and some trippy lights wouldn’t hurt.

DD What releases do you have in the works?

OC I am currently working on two EPs and a bunch of remixes to be released through a couple different labels. I like to keep people guessing though, so it’s all secrets for now.

DD Do you have a crew you enjoy hanging with? Some of other artists that compliment your mindset?

OC Yes! My crew is Astro Nautico out of Brooklyn, which also serves as a label and blog that I help run with Kuhn and Paul Jones. All of the artists we release on the label are of the same mindset and I think we all compliment each other nicely. Additionally, I’m really feeling the vibes from Team Bear Club in Kansas and the Broke City Crew out of Brooklyn.

DD Last words?

OC Thanks for the interview, keep on rocking in the free world & doot doota loo doo.
