Feels like a perfect Sunday feature. Enjoy the smooth rhythms of the ever talented, Archie Hamilton. In the interview below we cover his solid style and label Moscow Records. Hope you’re having a wonderful weeknd.

DD Archie, you’ve got a solid, sexy vibe with your music. Where does all this sexyness come from?

AH Haha! Thanks very much. I think the most important part of any track is the groove. I can’t really move forward with a project until the groove is right, so perhaps that has something to do with it…

DD You’ve had a prolific number of years recently, with residencies, gigs at fine clubs/nights and releases from your label, Moscow Records. What does all this mean to you? What vision do you bring to audiences, given these opportunities?

AH I have been very lucky, so I am very grateful for all of the opportunities that I have been given. It means a lot to work with some of the people that I have, and I really hope it continues this way.

I think the most important thing about going out partying is to forget about your troubles and have fun, so I like to play music that reflects that.
DD As I went through these Moscow Records releases I read about the “Introductions EP, Part 2”, where producers hone their craft in the Moscow Records studio and then release the new tunes. Could you explain this element of the label more?

AH Alex (who I work on Moscow with) and I wanted to figure out a way of breaking down boundaries between the DJ booth and the dance floor. We both know lots of people who have a good ear for music but not necessarily the technical knowhow to translate that into their own work. It’s more of a collaborative process than the initiative described – just getting in the studio with friends and seeing what comes out.

DD You have a strong ability to rework tracks in your own style while still holding to the deep, sultry vibe of the originals. Where did you first hear “Bushes”? That is a classy remix you did!

AH Thanks very much! I bought the record from Rough Trade in London years ago and I’ve always loved that vocal so much – it’s absolutely made for outdoor summer parties and I really wanted to make my own interpretation of it.

DD What do you have coming up in your world? How can we be a part of it?

AH DJ-wise, I’m resident for Rhythmatic here in London, which is every month. We are very lucky to have such a fantastic crowd, the vibe is electric – we had Boris Werner over from Amsterdam last night and he absolutely smashed it.

Production-wise, I have a lot of tracks coming out over that summer on labels like Fear of Flying, Lowpitch and my own label Moscow, so keep an eye open!

I’m a big supporter of both these artists so I was instantly interested in sharing their upcoming radio event together. For the past year, Mirror State has been building a memorable program with music ranging from garage to 2-step, ambient to dubstep. James Arctic joins him in the studio, and I’ve talked with both of them about how they met and what the celebration will sound like. If you’re on the west coast like me, tune in to Sub.fm tonight at 10PM-1AM, UK peoples from 6AM-9AM.

Mirror State

DD How did you meet James Arctic? I have to say I’m sad I haven’t physically met the two of you, we connect well!

MS I met James through our music after moving to the same city – out at a small bar, and we just stayed in contact from then.

DD Your Sub.Fm show is celebrating it’s 1 year this weekend, congratulations! I’ve really enjoyed the shows I’ve listened in on. How do you feel the show has evolved since it’s start, and what will the 1 year episode sound like?

MS Thanks a lot. The show for me has actually stayed quite similar over the last year in terms of how I do it. Maybe I talk more.. maybe I talk less.. but the sounds will continue to speak for themselves! The 1 year show will be full of new music from all around, as well as a few picks from the last year.

James Arctic

DD You will be joining Mirror State for his 1 year party live. What do you hope to add to the program? Any specific songs your hyped to share on Sub.FM?

JA Grime, grime, grime! Thinking about doing a little history of the genre – from old to new of some of my favourite and most influential tracks. I’ll also be playing all the forthcoming material I have, including some past releases and some other artists who I’m digging atm.

DD What does pizza mean to you?

JA It brings happiness like no other. It’s warmth and soft texture creates a mouth watering sensation, oozing in flavours after every bite.

This Warp Records artist delivered a brilliant Essential Mix for the BBC last week. His blissful yet heavy, funked out environment in last year’s Glass Swords album is highly recommended. Rustie is showing us the future, re-wiring the spectrum of musical expression just as Hudson Mohawke and Flying Lotus continue to do. Rustie has included tracks from Dreams, The Blessings, Obey City, Surkin, Lone, Krystal Klear as well of many of his own stellar productions. Keep an eye on Disco Droppings, you may see some of these artists featured with interviews in the near future.

The prolific Brenmar has tracks and features goin’ up left and right. A few tracks of his have found their way into many a dj set of mine, including “Be The One” and his remix of Ashanti’s “Fancy”. Today, he’s gracing Disco Droppings with his sultry R&B aesthetic. We talk about his style and participation in the Red Bull Music Academy 2011. Pick up his Let’s Pretend EP on Hum and Buzz Records as well as his remix of W8WTF on Senseless Records.

DD Hello Brenmar! I’m so hyped to have you on Disco Droppings. How is the hustle treating you today?

B Good good, just been in the studio all day, about to head back in a bit.

DD Have any hugely established artists contacted you after hearing a Brenmar remix of their track? Ashanti? Rihanna? Jamie Foxx?

B No one of that caliber yet, people are sleeping! I do have some really cool collabs I’m excited about though.

DD You were a participant on RBMA 2011.  Was this where you first met Canblaster? He’s a favorite of mine..his track “Chicken Run” cracks me up.

B I met Canblaster last year at Miami and we had talked online before RBMA for a good bit but it wasn’t until the academy that I got to really know him and work with him. He’s an Ableton wizard, lol.

DD I am auditioning for RBMA 2012 – I’m interested in what the experience meant to you. How were you challenged by the Academy, and what lectures did you enjoy the most?

B My favorite lectures were Young Guru, DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn, Tony Andrews and Erykah Badu. The schedule is pretty intense, def. The hardest part is getting up early every morning to attend two lectures, followed by studio time and then late night shows/parties. It adds up, believe me but it’s totally worth it, it’s a great experience.

DD I want to talk about your fashion/style for a bit. Not only is your music distinct and fresh, I would say the same about your clothes, tattoos, hair, it all works! Have you always been interested in these things? Is it a conscious aesthetic that you focus on?

B Ha, it’s just me man, it all works cause I’m not forcing anything I guess. Give me some gold, a snapback, and some Jordans and we good.

DD Do you plan on building a club night in your new city of New York, now that you’ve gained national and international attention?

B Can’t say I haven’t thought about it. I travel a lot which makes it difficult but we’ll see.

G. Davies is back, supporting his new EP, which can be picked up on Juno. Here’s a look into his current mindset regarding his tunes, show on Sub.FM and such.

DD To me, your “Mechanic EP” is a strong step forward. It has a distinct mix of energy and technique. How do you feel about the release?

GD All the tracks on the EP are at least 1 year old now, so to my ears they sound anything but fresh. Although in saying, this I am still pleased with ‘Crab Riddim’ & ‘Bacta’. Those being two of the better tracks I’ve produced to date.

DD What are your strongest non-musical influences?

GD Non-musical factors that influence my music? Loads really, depends what’s been going on in my personal life to a certain extent. David Lynch films are a big influence. ‘Crowbar’ on the latest EP features a sample from Inland Empire. I’m really into the vibe of his film’s. Proper dread. Would like to hope that carries over into certain tracks of mine.

DD How has your Sub.Fm show with Artek been going? I posted an interview with Hoodmode a little while ago, learned about him from Artek..

GD Sub FM’s been going alright. Handing over the reins to Artek for the next few months though. Taking a step away from the DJ thing to focus on writing songs for a band. It’s too difficult to keep up with new releases from within dance music, when my real passion lies in punk & hardcore. I wish I had a slot on a station where I could play whatever, a new dance tune followed by some grindcore or whatever. Bass music in general is hella saturated at the moment in my opinion, so I’m taking a hiatus as such from mixing, until I feel the urge again. Going through the motions is not the one.

DD What would you like to be known for?

GD Music wise, I’m not too bothered. Ideally to be in a self-sufficient touring band within the next year. Getting too old for this stuff, and don’t want to be one of those ageing hipsters you see hanging around at gigs chatting about how they saw some band 15 years ago. Aside from that I’d like my gravestone to say “Died Tragically Whilst Rescuing His Family From The Remains Of A Sinking Battleship.” Just like Royal Tenenbaum.
